Description:

Even if you have never visited Cambodia you have most probably seen countless pictures of Ta Prohm lost in the jungle. Along with Bayon, Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat, it is one of the must-visit temples at Angkor archaeological site.

This really is a most amazing temple, where ancient trees grow out of the even older stones. It is a temple lost and in harmony with nature.

History of Ta Prohm

Initially called Rajavihara, the temple of Ta Prohm was built by Jayavarman VII somewhere in the late-12th to early-13th centuries. It was one of the first major temples built during his reign. This temple is similar in layout and architectural design to Banteay Kdei and Preah Khan. Ta Prohm was dedicated to Jayavarman VII’s mother, and Preah Khan to his father.

A large sprawling temple with many dark corners and open areas to explore, the temple has many giant silk-cotton and fig trees entwined in its stonework, sometimes threatening collapse of areas. These make for excellent photo opportunities. It is surrounded by the a wall and moat around its perimeter, the usual entrance is from the east, through the east Gopura gate.

Getting to Ta Prohm

The simplest way is to get a tuk tuk from Siem Reap, sit back and relax. Alternatively you can cycle to the site.

Ta Prohm in Film

Even if you don’t realise it, you have most likely seen it in film, as much of the original Tomb Raider film, staring Angelina Jolie, was set here.

Ta Prohm Tip

Two tips for the price of one. The best way to visit the temple is to walk in one entrance and out the other side, arranging for your tuk tuk driver to pick you up from the opposite car park. Also, a good time to visit the temple is late in the day as most of the other visitors are heading towards the sunset viewing spot at Phnom Bakheng.

Let the adventure begin.
