Located near the famous Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, which first opened its doors in 1932 and reopened post-Covid in June 2022, the Royal Gardens are also home to a colony of fruit bats that circle the area en masse during dusk. So long as you have no fear of bats, then this is one of those free experiences that can make for a pleasant end to a long day.

Alternatively, you will often find special events held here, especially Apsara dancing displays, or sometimes even art installations. It is a very pleasant place to linger especially when the sun is beginning to set and the heat of the afternoon has started to dissipate.

Origins of the Royal Gardens Siem Reap

The Royal Gardens are made up of the River Gardens and the Royal Crusade for Independence Gardens, named after the historical events that took place when the former King Sihanouk and General Lon Nol were planning the Royal Crusade for Independence from French Colonial rule.
