Address:
Phnom Chhngok Cave, Tuek Chhou, Cambodia, Kampot
Description:

One of the earliest temples in Cambodia, this Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva dates back to the 7th century.

A short drive or cycle from Kampot town will bring you to the Phnom Chhngok Cave site, a series of mystical caves etched in a limestone mountain. At the entrance, groups of locals, likely children, await to flog trinkets, snacks and offer their services as guides.

After climbing the stone steps up the side of the mountain you will then descend into a cavern containing the shrine. Your guide will point out various rock formations on the way that look like elephants and other beasts.

It was previously possible to venture further into the cave system but this is now forbidden.

You can also stop off at Phnom Kbal Romeas on the way.

The steps and rocks can be slippery in the wet depending on your choice of footwear, so be wary.

Let the adventure begin.
